LJ icebreaker game
1. Reply with your name/nickname and I will write something random about you.
2. I will then tell you what song/movie reminds me of you.
3. I will pick a flavor of jello to wrestle with you in. <---um, no.
4. I will say something that only makes sense to you and me. [if possible]
5. I will tell you my first memory of you.
6. I will tell you what animal you remind me of.
7. I'll then ask you something that I've always wondered about you.
8. If I do this for you, you must post this on your LJ.

My involvement in fandom? Wow.
Um. I started writing seriously on Thanksgiving of 2000. ^^; Important date so I remembered it. My first works were original. For the first few years that's how it went. And then, I dunno, I wrote "Catharsis" about Wolfwood, and "Courtship Roulette" about Susan Sto Helit's continued vagaries of finding a mate and went, "Well, may as well hit fan fiction dot net then" and that started my account. When I found Saiyuki (on a bishounen-centered artsite I'd trolled looking for images of Sesshoumaru, and then after borrowing the first four DVDs from a girl in the Visual Arts Club, and then devouring everything I could get my grubby li'l hands on) everything fell into place and I can honestly say that I didn't find fandom but that fandom found me. Meeting Opti and Wilde had a lot to do with it and getting involved on LJ was solely the prospect of playing Hakuryuu in U_A, because omg these writers I'd adored had volunteered me for the part!
Even without that, I know I am a fan. I can't live without it and the highs I get from Roy's "I've Got A Date" Face or just the fact that 4Kids left in the part where Nami asked Luffy for help are too genuine for me to ignore. I'd have gotten involved somehow or I'd have exploded. I annoyed the crap outta Bunny before I found a 'healthy' outlet for it anyhow. Heee.
Blame U_A. Waaaaha.

1. Haven't heard it. Send it to me sometime?
5. *facepalm* Apparently I did that to *everyone*, at some point or another. ^^;;
6. Totally. And also totally forgetting about the FUR. XD
7. Errr, Carlow? I was originally majoring in computer animation, and Carlow has a program *and* a major in that, which most colleges near the east coast don't have. I could have gone south or west, but I was determined to edge my life further toward NYC if I could, and so Carlow it was. Once I visited I was in love with it - the area is a cross between big-city and this tiny green campus shoved on a hillside that's almost a secret, and the buildings look like Kenyon's little sister. The faculty was so cool, too, that when I decided to change my major in the 2nd week of class, I didn't even think about transferring schools.

4. Wait, he was who's gay mentor in your dream?
5. I think it was freshman bible study. I remember thinking you were randomly intimidating. Then you and I actually talked and that was that. HEH.
6. You're... I'd say a cat. What with all the random exploring and such. Except you're cool enough not to get stuck up a tree. Most of the time.
7. Okay, seriously, how do you do it? You've seen about a bajillion things - give me life advice or something.

You have perfect timing! I stumbled into my office Monday morning feeling especially crappy, turned on my computer, and found the only thing that could have possibly made me laugh at that moment: Wait, he was who's gay mentor in your dream?

The only downside? It made me wonder how soon we can swing our second retirement. :)

Actually, the f-list only seems to offer the occasional recommendation, but I listen when they do. ;) I check some anime review blogs; I download a fair number of fansubs to try stuff out; I check out some magazines (Newtype USA and Animege mostly); I occasionally buy a DVD on a whim or interesting cover.

Do you have rental places where you are? I mean, specifically anime rental places. There's one not far from my apt. and having them there has just been excellent. I've seen some wonderfully crappy stuff without any of the pain of knowing I'd just bought a copy of it for life XD

Yay!

7. What I miss most about the East Coast....I miss the feel of East Coast cities. There's a sort of quiet, shabby and yet stately sense of endurance about them. Even the old working-class row houses have detail and beauty you don't find as often on the utilitarian buildings out here. I miss the sense of self-sufficiency and competence you get from figuring out how to get around East Coast cities. I love how much they have packed into them, how much there is to explore and discover all in such a small space. They seem easier to see closely and explore, too, and like it's really you doing the exploring and seeing, because you're walking the streets rather than being walled off in your car. I miss trains and public transportation, because they make it easier to see since you don't have to drive. I miss the beauty and novelty of the architecture and the snow and the spring and the fall.

I could go on and on about everything I miss. Maybe I'll write you a letter about it :)
