All right, it's not subtext, or even deep at all, but I haven't used this icon in a while and I wanted to.

Am spending my lunch at the library, which, it turns out, has free wireless internet. My lunches have just become 63% less productive.

Except that I figured out some fairly interesting stuff about the way the shoulder works and the fact that really? Roy is lucky he could move and breath let alone carry a kid safety.

As it stands according to my research, Roy would have suffered the following injuries at a minimum:

Torn deltoid muscle. (front)
Torn Infraspinatus muscle. (back left side, shoulder)
Laceration to the trapezius muscle. (back left side, shoulder)
Laceration to the bracioradialis muscle. (left forearm)
Loss of one eye. (left)
Laceration to the rectus femoris*. (left thigh)
Laceration to the tricep muscle. (right upper-arm)

The potential other injuries, which may or may not have been missed by a hair's breath. (We are only left in doubt because the anime doesn't go into specifics, but each of these seem to be logical conclusions based on the wounds we actually see him with):

Chipped scapula (shoulder blade). (internal, left)
Severed/torn Axillary vein. (left)
Severed/torn cephallic vein. (left)
Crack along the inferior orbital fissure. (left)

The bit about the shoulder blade is what I find the most shudder inducing. In order to actually pin Roy to the wall, Bradley, considering the angle he was coming from, would have had to pushed the blade of his sword through several inches of muscle and then scrape it along the inside of the shoulder blade until he found the edge of the bone. He would then have had to twist it while adding further pressure to push the sword past the bones of the shoulder and ribs and through the muscles of Roy's back. There's no other way it could have worked unless Bradley broke the shoulder blade itself, and since Roy still has use of that arm later I'm disinclined to believe that particular possibility.

I'd say I was grossed out, but that would be a lie. This whole thing is wildly fascinating. Oh! Hey! Anyone out there with speculation as to the exact nature of the injuries to Roy's eye? I want details.

* This injury seems to have been fairly serious since in the closing of the final episode we see Roy with a cain, but in point of fact it doesn't actually look like it was all that severe. I'm assuming that the cain might aslo serve if Roy was simply too weak to stand on his own at that point. It's also possible that there were further leg injuries inflicked by Archer, but I'm reluctant to add those kinds of things to this already substantial laundry-list.

I tend to suspend my disbelief when it comes to anime and injuries. Even the very "real" anime series tend to have some of the most fantastic injuries. Example: Cowboy Bebop. Episode 5. Spike (the man! squee) gets stabbed through the shoulder (remind you of anything?) by Vicious' katana, then gets pushed through a cathedral stained glass window, and falls down several stories.

There is also a huge explosion from the grenade that he "dropped" inside the cathedral. Sure, he's shown later covered in bandages and all that. But, first, how what his skull not smashed on the sidewalk? We're told to assume that Jet caught him with the Hammerhead. Right. But there aren't any burns from the explosion, or lacerations from the glass shards flying around him. His skin's not even slightly red. An explosion of that degree and in that vicinity would cause some nice toasting, a first degree burn at least.

And that's only the first of the episodes where he gets seriously injured. Don't even get me started on the rest of the series or freakin' Knockin' on Heaven's Door, where he should have died before hitting the water when he's pushed out of the train. Gnaagh.

Oh, and I recommend Monster, if you can find it online for download. This series is a mindscrew and a half, but not in the Evangelion sort of mindscrew. There is no real description for it, so I recommend watching it and finding out for yourself. ^_^

Free wireless at the library!? Right now I'm borrowing Sheela's laptop my dad won in a raffle that has wireless.

We totally have to go together and be unproductive and not communicate while in the same room. It will be on the cutting edge of technology.
