What could be the start of a longer Saiyuki fic. Written during a staff meeting, I was just thinking about escaping. Apparently my Hakkai Muse agreed.

In 100 years no one would remember. Or at least, no one would remember the truth. Crusading monks and daemons, and gods who came down and walked the Earth, would be nothing more than fairy tales. In a thousand years it wouldn’t be remembered at all.

He wondered if he would still be around in 1000 years. He wondered if anyone would remember him.

In the years that had passed since the end of the minus wave, those youki who had survived had gone into hiding. Those that had survived.

When the wave receded it had left devastation in its wake. Bodies littering the countryside, towns filled with nothing but corpses, all ravaged by a madness whose cure had, perhaps, been worse than the affliction itself.

No one had told them that this was how it would end. They had thought they were saving the world. Hadn’t realized they were only saving one world. A world in which youki had no place.

There's something tickling the back of mind about this...would anyone actually read it, if I wrote a sort of future piece from this?

Absolutely. The question of aftermath is a loomer in Saiyuki. Minekura's hinted at what it's going to be like, and it's going to be bad. And as they say, the reward for a job well done is another job...

It's the little things that stick...Like the fact that no one believed that it was actually even possible for a human to become youki, that Hakkai's change was legend. And how many half-breeds are really out there? And even if Goku wears a limiter, he's not human, OR youki.

Alright, maybe these aren't little things, but they're things so big that I think they get over looked.

'Cause really, what's the average lifespan of a human-turned-youki? We tend to just assume a natural life span, but who's to say the supernatural element of their change wouldn't make them something completely other. The same can be said for Goku. Look how little he aged in 500 years. Unless he's killed, how long do you think he'd live?

And what of the potential medical issues that arise when you mix two different species? So he's sterile. There's a start. But what of other issues that might manifest as he grows older. We forget, I think, how young these boys are. 22, 23. I mean, I'm older. (shut up, 24 is OLD :-P)

Most importantly, we must remember that for all his super-sanzo power, Sanzo, is simply human. Even if he makes it through this whole mess, he's got, what? another 60 years tops. Compared to some of the others running around, that nothing.

I think the question becomes, what if Hakkai is around in several thousand years? He's around and he's the only one.
