Title: Beginning
Author: Rune
Words: 100
Summary: Everything starts somewhere...

"Why'd you do it?" Would have been a sneer but for the undercurrent of hard fought admiration.

Wiping blood from the edge of his mouth, Mark stood eying the boy in front of him. Switching foster homes had never been easy, but it was harder now. He made it harder on purpose. Write an article for the school paper your first week about how the Greeks were big on sports and being gay, you got a label. You also got your ass handed to you.

"Wanted to make a good first impression."

"You're an asshole," as he fell into step.

Title: Invitation
Author: Rune
Words: 100
Summary: The first dinner.

The sofa was lumpy, with a bar in the middle. If you sat down too fast it'd slice you in half ass-upwards. Wall to wall carpet, a shade of green that'd never existed in nature, was marked by stains no one ever asked about. When it got dark the neighbors could be heard through the walls, yelling at kids, the TV, each other.

"I'm going go." Ryan pulled himself up from the sunken couch and reached for his bag.

Mark glanced up from his book, "Getting dark though. You could stay if you wanted."

The bag stayed where it was.

Title: Wasted
Author: Rune
Words: 100
Summary: You can not rescue those who do not wish to be saved.

He'd watched her. She'd gone from beautiful, from everything he'd ever loved or admired, to a ghost. Face thin and hollow, her dark hair hung in her eyes, making the shadows even deeper.

He'd watched her. She'd saved him, pulling him from a system that didn't care and wouldn't help into to a real home. But he hadn't been able to save her, had watched, like a man imprisoned, as she'd taken the needle to her veins.

He watched her and wondered. The men who sold on the corners were monsters. To save her, he'd have become a monster too.
