Woot!

**cue wavy flashback**

I woke up this morning to my mom giving me instructions. Call this person, wrap that gift, clean this part of the house. All normal things, all things I figured I could remember no problem. Until the very end...

She was on her way out of my room, and I was back to about 90% asleep, when Mom turned to me and said, "Oh, right. You need to go by your grandma's at 12:00."

"Wha'?" I asked, obviously at my most articulate.

"You're cooking the turkey."

"What!" Now 100% awake, I just stared at my mother. "I'm what?"

"I have to go to work, and the turkey needs to cook for six hours, so you need to go up and put it in the oven." She was so serene and calm about the whole thing. Like, sure, giving your daughter the monumental task of cooking the Christmas turkey was no big deal. Do it all the time. Especially when she's never cooked a turkey before.... Mom started to rattle off instructions, I started to panic.

"Wait, wait," still not awake enough to see the trouble I was headed for, I sat up, "Can you write this down for me?"

"I don't want to write it down, that's why I'm telling you." Ya can't argue with "mom logic."

"Um, well, can I have a sec, so I can write it down?"

"Are you paying attention?"

"Yes! Of course."

"Then you don't need to write it down." I did a very literal *facepalm*, and sat for several seconds trying to compose myself.

"Are you sure?" I asked, as it slowly dawned on me that there was no out of this one.

"Yes, you'll be fine. Just follow my instructions," and here she again began to recited everything, only once stopping to repeat herself ("You have to preheat the oven, or you'll waste time just sitting around waiting."). I nodded along the whole time, praying desperately I'd remember it all later.

The cooking of the bird itself wasn't so bad. I remembered the instructions and was given a reprieve from stuffing since we do ours on the outside of the carcass, which was pleasant. Draining the turkey was a new exercise in "Ew!" but, I've seen worse, so I figure I can do it again if needs be.

Only my mother would spring something like this on me. It's good to know she has faith in my cooking skills and memory, but even so, a day's advance notice might have been nice. I just hope I don't get roped into this every year... unless she lets me take notes next time.

And dudes, I finished my 838 SS fic. Woot! Will post once it's gone up on the site. *is proud of self* One more plot bunny shot, skinned and hangin' on the wall.

Which one? The fic or the turkey? 'Cause I kicked ass at both! *raises the roof* *stops, is hugely embarrassed and blushes*

Umm...The turkey looked good. We'll eat it today (buffet style family gathering), but it looks good. The fic seems pretty cute too. Am rather hugely stoked that it turned out as well as it did, though there wouldn't have been anything had [livejournal.com profile] pvt_tiger not done and 11th hour beta for me. *wipes brow* whew!

Hey, you ever come visit State-side and I'll make you all the turkey you want. Though, I've gotta say, what I'm known for are my - truly!- kick ass tacos. Heh. Real mexican food, made by a real Mexican. That's the ticket.

Well, I do wicked good desserts. *grins* And that's always good times.

'Sides, my tacos aren't that spicy at all. Ohh...I do really, really good veggie lasagna. Mm...Reminds me that I should make that again some time soon. Yum!
